Falafel Pockets

I've been reading a lot of blogs lately with drool-worthy photos of Middle Eastern food, mainly gyros, falafel, kebabs, etc. Since I live so far from anywhere that would serve this kind of food, I thought I'd make my own at home. I found a recipe for falafel pockets:


... and while the chickpea cakes tasted great with all the seasoning, this is not something I'd attempt to make again. The cakes refused to stay together as they cooked, so I ended up with more of a chickpea mash. The pita was your standard store-bought stuff, which was fine, but the yogurt sauce (which you can't actually see in the photo) was lacking in real flavor despite being seasoned with cucumber, red onion and lemon juice.

  1. They need a lot more dressing-up, too. Tahini sauce, tomato, onion, lettuce, cucumber... I've never seen one served with yogurt sauce.

    If you ever come to Montreal, have a falafel here. we have a huge middle eastern population and their food is to doe for!

  2. I'm not sure where I got this recipe from, but yours sounds so much better with the Tahini sauce, tomato, onion, lettuce and cucumber. I think I'm going to let the professionals handle this from now on!

  3. Greek Gyros with lamb is one of the meals I plan on making. I'm waiting for Ams to get some gas for the bbq because the recipe I'm using calls for the lamb to be cooked on the grill. We do love us some gyros, but I've personally never had it with lamb. That's the only way Ams likes it so ...
