Tagged!

Colleen from Cooking This and That tagged me to share seven random/weird facts about myself. Just like Colleen, since this is a food blog I will share food-related oddities rather than spill all my deep dark secrets!

1. I love the combination of popcorn and milk. No, not eaten like cereal, I mean a big bowl of popcorn eaten while drinking a tall glass of cold milk.

2. The only food I really and truly dislike are hot dogs. I want to like them, but every time I try a bite of someone's it makes me gag. How un-American of me!

3. I'm not that into sweets, but I love all things cake. Cupcakes, regular cake, whatever. I also prefer boxed cake mix and canned frosting to homemade. I also don't like most bakery cakes or cupcakes (too sugary or grainy).

4. I have never made my own bread. I'm afraid of yeast.

5. I have yet to make a successful roast beef. I don't know why I have so much trouble with this particular preparation.

6. I hate eating the same thing more then twice in a row (I'll eat dinner leftovers for lunch the next day but that's it). I will, however, eat the same thing for breakfast for months on end without tiring of it.

7. And finally, the real reason I don't bake is not because I don't think I'd be good at it, it's because I don't want the byproducts in the house because we will eat all of it ourselves. And I can't bring the stuff to work or send it in with SP because none of our coworkers will eat it because it's fattening.

And now to tag 7 people...

(I'm going to have to get back to you on this one since Colleen took most of the people I would have tagged. Thanks, hon!)

Tagged!

Dani over at The Average Cook tagged me for a meme. It's been awhile since I've done something like this. This is a 5 Random Things About Me meme so here goes...

1. I hate hot dogs. I try to like them, but I just don't. Every once in awhile I try a bite of SP's hoping maybe my tastes have changed, but alas.

2. I used to be a picky eater. I'm sure this isn't shocking considering most kids were picky eaters at some point, but it pains me to remember how I used to hate tomatoes. Now I can't get enough of them, but there was a time when I didn't. I credit my parents for always making me try at least a bite of something before deciding I wouldn't eat it.

3. I can't wink. I've just never been able to get the hang out of it for some reason.

4. I'm an avid reader. These days I don't have as much time to read, but I always try to read the daily newspaper before going to bed. I also read certain sections of the Sunday NY Times throughout the week while I'm getting ready for work or before bed if I have some extra time. Because I have minor OCD, I read the same 5 sections in the same order every week - magazine, Week in Review, Real Estate, New Jersey, and Style. I never deviate from this order. Don't ask me how I came up with that order in the first place, but now that's how it has to be done.

5. I would give anything to go back to England, even for a 2-week vacation. It pains me every day that we didn't go there on our honeymoon, back before the dollar tanked. Now we have to wait who knows how long to go back since we can't see spending double the vacation because of the pound vs. dollar exchange rate.

Thanks for tagging me, Dani! Now it's my turn to pass along the fun. I'm going to tag:

Melissa at Alosha's Kitchen
Katie at A Byootaful Life
Leica at Le fang, le kwatsa
Jessy at Messy Jessy's Musings

and one of my newest readers/commenters:

New Spice Rack & Fridge Meme

Awhile back my buddy Katie at A Byootaful Life posted a peek into her fridge meme of sorts. I thought it sounded like a neat idea and I've been meaning to do it ever since. Today seemed like the perfect day because I also wanted to showcase my brand new spice racks:

SP has been meaning to buy me a spice rack for ages, but we could never find one I liked. We scoured the home store yesterday looking for something, but everything we found was too long for the wall I wanted to use. And then there they were - the perfect shelves. These are actually trophy shelves, but who cares. They look great and fit all my spices nicely, with room to add more. Here's how the whole corner looks now:

Our kitchen isn't big so we took the eat-in space and bought a prep table for more counter space. I keep most of my kitchen gadgets in here and do almost all my prep work here. We even installed the spotlights I had over my prep table at the old apartment so I could have more light in that corner. Until this weekend all my spices lined the back wall, but now that they're up on the shelves I have much more surface area. I'm not planning to leave the mixing bowls there, but I haven't found them a home yet. A great big THANK YOU to my darling husband for installing the shelves this weekend!! You are my hero. :)

And now, on to the fridge meme. Here's the outside of the fridge. Whenever I look at a picture of the fridge it looks like a face:

And here it is with all the doors open:

OK....the left side - this has butter, sour cream, cream cheese, various mustards, ketchup, heavy cream, a few open bottles of wine, mayo and jams:

... and the right side - the butter dish, more ketchup (how did that happen?), salad dressings and sauces, pickled jalapenos, banana peppers, pickles, a container of chicken stock and 1/2 and 1/2 for SP's morning coffee:

Here's the body of the fridge. The top shelf on the right is where we keep things like milk, bottled water, OJ and cranberry juice. On the top left are various leftovers (I think I see some pasta and sauce, tomato puree and potato salad) and a jar of mustard. On the next shelf down is more tomato sauce (leftover Bolognese, I think) and some ground beef being defrosted. Then there's the cheese drawer, which has cheddar, Pecorino, mozzarella and a stick of pepperoni in it. The bottom shelf on the left is where I keep the eggs and bacon and on the right we've got SP's beer, more leftovers and a jar of salsa:

This is the crisper drawer on the left. I've got half an onion, some celery, 1/4 of a bag of baby spinach, cilantro and a dried-up sprig of rosemary in here:

... and the crisper drawer on the right has a bag of baby arugula, mushrooms, cauliflower, carrots, scallions, parsley and a red pepper in it:

There you have it! A peek inside the fridge of The Home Cook. Next time I'll give you a tour of the freezer drawer. Right now I've got a ton of freezer bags full of pork chops, ground beef, chicken breasts, tilapia filets, frozen pizza dough, English muffins, a few bags of frozen veggies, some shrimp shells for that shrimp stock I keep meaning to make and a huge drawer of ice courtesy of our ice maker.

Katie over at A Byootaful Life tagged me for a meme. It was originally meant for cats to answer (she belongs to a blogging group for cats) but she said it would work OK for humans so I'll give it a shot.

What were you doing 10 years ago?

Let's see....10 years ago I was 16. This was an interesting time in my life. I would have been going into my junior year of high school which means I hadn't started dating my first real boyfriend yet, but we were best friends and spent a lot of time talking on the phone. At this time of year I would have been vacationing with my parents up in Maine, doing a lot of reading and angsty teen stuff. I was an excellent angsty teen. :)

What were you doing 1 year ago?

A year ago SP and I were starting to think seriously about buying a house, saving money feverishly and thinking about where we wanted to settle down. I had been at my job almost a year at that point and was hoping for a promotion. Last year we went to Maine with my parents, but I think we went the week after July 4 so at this point I was probably working (boy, I don't miss the 24-hour news life!) and getting ready for our vacation.

Five snacks you enjoy:

1. Hummus and pita chips
2. Sliced apples and cheddar cheese
3. Cashews and peanuts
4. Peanut butter on toast
5. A bowl of cereal

Five songs that you know all the lyrics to:

I am SO not good at music questions. If I know the words chances are I have no clue who sings it or what it's called, so I'm just going to skip this one. :)

Five things you would do if you were a millionaire:

1. Pay off our house, cars, student loans and any other debt
2. Put money into our retirement fund
3. Plan a month-long trip to England
4. Donate to charity
5. Help my parents, if they needed it, and give enough money to my grandmother to make her comfortable.

Five bad habits:

1. Biting my lip. I've been better about it in the last 10 years or so, but when I was younger all the pictures of me had me biting my lip.
2. Leaving piles of stuff around the house. Drives SP absolutely insane.
3. Trying to get the cat to be a lap cat when he obviously doesn't want to be.

I know there are more...but I'm drawing a blank.

Five things you like doing:

1. Cooking
2. Walking/Running
3. Reading
4. Blogging
5. Sleeping :P

Five things you would never wear again:

1. Bangs teased into a high arch with hairspray
2. Leggings
3. Scrunchies
4. Jeans with the cuffs rolled and tucked
5.

Five favorite toys:

This is a totally bizarre question. I don't have toys anymore.
