Fry Up

One of the things I loved about living in England was having a fry up for breakfast. Whenever I watch a British TV show or movie and see someone cooking breakfast in a big skillet I always get nostalgic. I also wonder how they manage to cook everything in one pan. SP said he wanted sausage and eggs for breakfast and since we had some mushrooms and tomatoes on hand I decided to attempt a fry up.

For my first attempt the result was better than I anticipated. I cooked the sausage on one side of my large nonstick skillet and put the mushrooms and tomatoes on the other side. Once they were cooked through I added the eggs, which is where I ran into a bit of trouble. Either my pan or the burner grate isn't level so the egg whites ran everywhere, but I managed to contain them enough to cook some decent looking fried eggs. Everything tasted great (except for the potato cake that I cooked in another pan...it was a tad too crispy) and SP really loved the meaty mushrooms and tomatoes. If only I'd remembered the can of baked beans we had in the pantry this would have been pretty darn close to a traditional fry up.

  1. Dear L.S.,
You're making me hungry (and nostalgic!) The "S" breakfast! The Unthank kitchen! Thanks for the little trip down memory lane :) Miss you--and congratulations on your one year anniversary. I love reading! Love, B.S.

  2. B.S. - Hi!!!! I've missed you. How are things? We need to talk more. As I was cooking breakfast I was thinking about the S breakfast and our trip to Unthank. If only we'd discovered that place sooner we could have gained even more weight. :P

  3. I've been watching a few cooking shows from England lately and one featured Black Pudding ... are you a fan? The whole idea of it sort of freaks me out, but it's a traditional English food, isn't it? Just thought I'd ask!

  4. Katie - I can honestly say I've never tried black pudding nor do I have any interest in trying it. I'm usually a very adventurous eater but the idea of eating blood does not appeal to me in the slightest.

  5. it's funny you say the potato cake was too crispy... I was looking at it thinking how much I would love to bite into it. I like things like that REALLY crispy though. so just hand it to me next time. :P

  6. I'm with SP - I just love mushrooms and tomatoes with a fry up. Sometimes Jac will even cook the mushrooms in butter and garlic.
