Crab and Corn Chowda Mac

I saw Rachael Ray make Crab and Corn Chowda Mac last week and it looked and sounded good so I thought I'd give it a shot. The resulting dish certainly looked tasty:

... but the flavors were all wrong. The crab completely overwhelmed the dish (something I'd read in the reviews on FoodNetwork.com, but since we like crab I didn't think it would be an issue). In the description of the recipe in the cookbook she says she wanted to combine mac & cheese and crab and corn soup into one dish. The problem was, the resulting dish was a combination of the two...exactly what she was going for, but it simply did not work. I wish I could explain it better, but all I can say is I would avoid this dish. It was most certainly NOT a keeper.

  2. I just wanted to say thank you for posting a "bad" recipe!

When something doesn't work, I enjoy knowing about it almost as much as when something is fantastic!!

  3. Wow, I'm really surprised that it didn't taste nice because it looks so great! Something about the colours of the bacon against the pasta, yum!

  5. Joelen - It's deceptively gorgeous-looking. Taste...not so good.

Kelly - You're welcome. :) I don't like just posting the good recipes. When I search online for information about a recipe I want to try I like to see someone who actually made it comment on it, especially if they didn't like it, so I know to steer clear.

Katie - It looks gorgeous, but the flavors didn't work. I'm actually thinking about how to modify it...remove the crab, maybe sub in chicken. It really is gorgeous so it's a shame it didn't taste good.

Carimeli - I love the way the red of the bacon plays off the yellow pasta and the green chives. Such a shame the flavors didn't work.

  8. This sure is a good looking dish. Sorry it didn't taste as good but maybe next time you can replace the crab meat with shrimps and I am sure it will taste so much better. By the way, beautiful pix.
